Tibet visas
Tibet is one of the five autonomous regions of the People’s Republic of China, so to get there you need to refer to the visa requirements for China.
Your passport must be valid for at least six months after the expiry date of your visa for China. But under no circumstances is this visa sufficient to visit Tibet. You need a special permit. To obtain it, you theoretically need to be part of an “organized group” (minimum of five people).
There is no French Embassy on site.
There is no Tibetan Embassy in France.
Vaccines and Safety in Tibet
Vaccination
- Compulsory vaccinations and certificates: nothing special
- Recommended vaccinations and certificates: as with all travel, be up to date with the vaccination calendar for DTP, viral hepatitis A and B, whooping cough and, for children, rabies and measles. For stays in rural areas, it’s best to be immunized against rabies, typhoid and Japanese encephalitis.
- Local diseases: food- and drink-related illnesses. No malaria at this altitude.
Security
As a poor region of China, sanitary regulations are relatively weak. Hygiene is uncertain in restaurants, markets and stores. Tap water is not drinkable. Prefer bottled water, preferably imported.
Tibet health insurance
Why take out international health insurance when traveling or living in Tibet? Quite simply because healthcare costs can quickly reach very high levels abroad. In addition, health insurance is compulsory in China in order to receive treatment in a public or private establishment. Repatriation cover is also an essential criterion. In the event of a serious accident, medical repatriation to the nearest medical center or to the country of residence may be necessary. Depending on where you are at the time of the accident, and the medical prognosis, it may be necessary to charter a helicopter or medical aircraft.
