Vaccines and Safety in Malaysia
Vaccination
- Compulsory vaccinations and certificates: Nothing in particular, except yellow fever for travellers from endemic areas.
- Recommended vaccinations and certificates: be up to date on the vaccination calendar for typhoid, rabies, DTP, viral hepatitis A and B, and in the case of prolonged stays in rural areas, Japanese encephalitis.
- Local diseases: Malaria, Japanese encephalitis, lymphatic filariasis and dengue fever can be contracted from infected mosquito bites, although these diseases have been on the decline for several years. Avoid contact with dogs and other animals, as there is a risk of catching rabies. Other food and drink-related problems include shigellosis, salmonellosis and collective food poisoning.
Security
Petty criminals are fond of foreign nationals, and robberies are very common in major urban centers such as Kuala Lumpur. Due to the high incidence of robberies and assaults (physical, sexual, stabbing), it is advisable to avoid carrying handbags, cameras or other high-value equipment on your shoulder.
Due to the presence of terrorist acts, the number of police officers on the streets has increased, but you should always remain alert and vigilant.
Since 2013, the north and east coasts of the state of Sabah and the surrounding islands are formally inadvisable due to people being kidnapped or killed in the area.
Health insurance in Malaysia
Why take out international health insurance when traveling or living in Malaysia? Quite simply because healthcare costs can quickly reach very high levels abroad. Moreover, health insurance is compulsory in Malaysia if you wish to be treated in a public or private hospital. Repatriation cover is also an essential criterion. In the event of a serious accident, you may need to be medically repatriated to the nearest medical center or to your country of residence. Depending on where you are at the time of the accident, and on the medical prognosis, it may be necessary to charter a helicopter or medical aircraft.
