How do I choose a student insurance policy for Switzerland?
Is health insurance compulsory for foreign students in Switzerland?
In Switzerland, health insurance is compulsory for all residents, including foreign students. However, exemptions are possible under certain conditions, notably linked to the student’s country of origin and length of stay.
- Students from the EU/EFTA and the UK: Students from the EU, EFTA or the UK may be exempted from Swiss health insurance if they do not work in Switzerland and remain covered by their home country’s social security system. They can use their European Health Insurance Card for treatment in Switzerland. However, the EHIC covers certain treatments, but does not replace full health insurance. For example, it generally does not cover repatriation costs or certain types of non-emergency specialist care. Dental treatment and certain other types of care are also not covered.
- Students from other countries: Students from non-EU/EFTA countries can also apply for an exemption, provided their private insurance cover is deemed equivalent to Swiss basic insurance. This exemption is generally limited to three years, with the possibility of extension for a further three years.
In all other cases, foreign students must take out Swiss health insurance or international student insurance within three months of their arrival.
Health insurance for foreign students in Switzerland
For international students in Switzerland, there are several options for obtaining adequate medical coverage. Here are two possibilities to consider:
International health insurance :
Foreign students in Switzerland can opt for international student insurance. Goldstudent health insurance offers comprehensive medical coverage tailored to the specific needs of students. It includes 24/7 emergency assistance, covering medical expenses, hospitalization, repatriation and more. It offers the advantage of multilingual communication, high coverage limits and worldwide geographic coverage, essential for those who travel frequently.
Local Swiss health insurance :
Students can also choose to take out local health insurance in Switzerland. While this can be a viable option, international students may encounter challenges such as language barriers and complex contract details. Coverage limits and service levels may vary between companies, and this insurance may not cover travel outside Switzerland.
These options allow students to choose the coverage that best suits their needs and lifestyle in Switzerland.
Do I need health insurance for my study visa to Switzerland?
Among the documents required to apply for a study visa in Switzerland, an international health insurance certificate is essential. This insurance must be valid for the entire duration of your stay and cover you in the event of illness, emergency or accident during your studies in Switzerland.
Most international students need a visa to enter and stay in Switzerland for their studies. We therefore recommend that you contact the Swiss consulate in your country for up-to-date information and a list of the documents required for your visa application.
