Expatriate insurance Mauritius
Mauritius is a popular destination for many expatriates. Before moving to this beautiful country, there are a few important things to consider about your expatriation and medical coverage. Mondassur offers you in-depth information on Mauritius and the importance of taking out adequate health insurance for your expatriation.
Mauritius is attracting more and more expatriates with its mildness, charm, quality of life, economic growth, cultural diversity and tax advantages… However, there are some practicalities to bear in mind: once you declare that you are no longer permanently resident in France, you are no longer covered by social security, and often not by your mutual insurance company. So don’t forget to take out expatriation insurance to ensure that you and your family have good medical cover abroad.

Working in Mauritius
Tourism is the sector that recruits the most in Mauritius, along with new technologies and communications. The free zone has created numerous employment opportunities, particularly in the off-shore services sector. To find a job in Mauritius, it’s best to check job offers on the Internet before you leave. Word of mouth also works very well. You should also be aware that, as in many foreign countries, local employment is protected, so your potential future employer will have to justify the fact that your skills are specific and could not be found among the Mauritian population. Finally, as living standards are relatively lower, so are wages.
Schooling in Mauritius
French and international schools are well represented. However, tuition fees are high and the waiting list can be very long. So it’s a good idea to register well in advance.
Accommodation in Mauritius
Prices depend on a number of criteria, including the property’s location, the quality of construction and the services included. In all cases, the purchase or rental price is lower than in France.
Expect to pay between EUR 400 and EUR 700 for family accommodation in tourist areas, and more than double that for seaside accommodation. You can rent directly or through a real estate agency. Agency fees will be shared between the owner and the tenant.
What is the cost of living in Mauritius?
With accommodation options starting at around €200 to €300 per month, relatively low transport costs and a fairly reasonable food budget, living in Mauritius is no great challenge. The cost of living is lower than in Europe, but higher than in North Africa or Asia.
What’s more, Mauritius’ international tax system is highly attractive:
- Application of a single 15% tax rate on income
- 15% VAT rate
- Abolition of the real estate wealth tax (IFI)
- Elimination of real estate capital gains tax
- No property or council tax
- No inheritance tax
However, for expatriates looking for a better quality of life and/or moving in with their family, a minimum monthly allowance of €2500 is required, including car, children’s schooling and leisure activities. Imported produce is expensive, so it’s better to buy fruit and vegetables directly from the market rather than from the supermarket. Healthcare costs may be lower than in Europe, but they are still expensive, and the local social security system will only cover a tiny fraction. To reduce your local expenses, we recommend that you take out private insurance before you leave for Mauritius.
Driving in Mauritius?
As Mauritius is a former British colony, traffic flows on the left. A rental car is the ideal means of transport for touring the country. To rent a car in Mauritius, you must be at least 21 years old (which varies according to vehicle category) and have held a driving license for at least one year. The speed limit is 40 km/h in town, 80 km/h on roads and 110 km/h on freeways. The fatal accident rate is quite high. The main roads are relatively good, but the secondary roads are very narrow.
French driving licenses are recognized in Mauritius. The Traffic Office in Port-Louis issues a Mauritian license, to be renewed annually, on presentation of the French permit. The procedure is free of charge and completed within a day.
Hygiene and eating habits in Mauritius
Hygiene is variable in restaurants, markets and stores. We advise against drinking tap water (due to contamination of the distribution network), preferring imported bottled water such as Evian or Vittel.
There is a ciguatera risk (risk of scratching) in Mauritius. Avoid eating fish species locally known to be toxic. Ask the fishermen for advice. It is advisable to empty the fish thoroughly. Do not eat the head, eggs or viscera, especially the liver, which are more toxic than the fillets.
