Italy's healthcare system for foreigners
- You are a European citizen living in Italy for less than a year: You can apply for an EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) before you leave. You’ll be reimbursed on the same terms as local residents. Be careful, however, as the ceilings are only adapted to public-sector rates. Italy’s national healthcare system is quite disparate from one region to the next: facilities in the north, reputed to be of better quality, are overcrowded. In addition, laboratory tests, prostheses and consultations with a large number of specialists are only partially covered. International health insurance is therefore essential, whether you’re just passing through or planning to stay in Italy for a few months for a semester of study or an internship.
- You are seconded to Italy by your employer: You will continue to be covered by the social security system in your home country. However, you will need additional international health insurance to be adequately covered.
- You are an expatriate :
In this case, if you wish, you can benefit from the same rights as Italians. To do this, you need a residence permit, then register with the local health authority (Azienda Sanità Locale) by presenting the following documents:
- A valid ID,
- Its “Codice Fiscale
- A letter from your employer,
- Residence permit
Do I need health insurance in Italy?
Whether you’re simply a traveller or an expatriate in Italy, we strongly advise you to take out private insurance. Even though the public health system is generally competent, waiting times for treatment are very long. So it’s much more convenient to turn to private medicine, but the fees charged easily exceed the reimbursement ceilings set by the social security system.
