Spain's healthcare system for foreigners
French nationals living in Spain must provide proof of residence in Spain and of participation in the social security contribution system if they wish to benefit from the local social security system. They must also be able to justify one of the following conditions in order to benefit from the health card:
- have an employment contract in Spain or be registered as a self-employed worker
- be registered as a job seeker in Spain after having worked in Spain
- be receiving a pension from a Spanish organization.
It is necessary to request registration on the health registers 3 months after entering Spanish territory. Please note that dental and optical care is not covered by the Spanish public health system. What’s more, depending on the region of the country you’re in, like other European systems, the Spanish health system is competent, but waiting times and response times are long.
Do I need health insurance in Spain?
The answer is yes, whatever your situation! Spanish social security reimbursement ceilings do not always cover all medical expenses (ceilings are sometimes too low, and dental and optical care are systematically excluded). What’s more, there are a number of situations that make you ineligible for the Spanish Insalud system.
Which health insurance for Spain?

- You can choose the doctor and health facilities of your choice
- Health cover still valid during your temporary return to France.
