Vaccines and Safety in France
Vaccination
- Compulsory vaccinations and certificates: There are no compulsory vaccinations for visitors. The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) certifies your entitlement to health insurance in Europe. During a temporary stay in a member state of the European Union, it entitles you to reimbursement of medically necessary treatment. We recommend that you take out additional insurance.
- Recommended vaccinations and certificates: Diphtheria, tetanus and polio vaccinations (DTP) and BCG tuberculosis vaccination.
- Local diseases: Nothing to report
Advice for your stay in France
To prepare for your stay in France, you need to be aware of some of the lesser-known aspects of everyday life and local culture.
- Shop opening hours: Many shops, especially in small towns, close on Sundays and have reduced opening hours on Mondays. Stores may also close at lunchtime (12pm-2pm).
- Rail transport: Train strikes are relatively frequent in France. To avoid the unexpected, download the SNCF app and check for regular updates.
- Food and catering: Meals in France are often longer than elsewhere, especially at lunchtime. Plat du jour” formulas in local restaurants can be an excellent option for a quality meal at lower cost.
- Health and pharmacies: In France, pharmacies play a central role in providing medical advice. Unlike in some countries, over-the-counter medicines (such as paracetamol) are only available in pharmacies.
- Tipping: In France, service is included in the restaurant bill. It’s not compulsory to leave an extra tip, but a small gesture (a few euros) is appreciated.
- Obtaining a carte Vitale: For foreign residents eligible for French social security, obtaining a carte Vitale can take several months or even years. Supporting documents such as a translated birth certificate, proof of residence and a temporary Social Security number are required.

Health insurance in France
Why take out international health insurance when traveling or living in France? Quite simply because healthcare costs can quickly reach very high levels abroad. Furthermore, to obtain your Schengen visa, insurance is compulsory in France as part of the Schengen visa application process. Repatriation cover is also an essential criterion. In the event of a serious accident, medical repatriation to the nearest medical center or to the country of residence may be necessary. Depending on where you are at the time of the accident, and the medical prognosis, it may be necessary to charter a helicopter or medical aircraft.
Mondassur can help you choose your international health insurance by helping you compare the different offers on the market. Depending on your profile, we can offer you different types of travel insurance, international student insurance and expatriate insurance.
