Would you like to welcome a friend , family member or employee to the Schengen area ? To obtain a visa, you’ll need to provide an “attestation d’accueil” and take out Schengen insurance.
What documents do I need to obtain a Schengen Visa?
We have provided a summary of the documents required to apply for a Schengen visa:
- Passport valid for more than 6 months after visa expires
- A welcome certificate
- A letter of introduction
- Proof of regular income (€32.50 per day if lodging // €65 per day for other travelers)
- Travel insurance covering medical care and repatriation with a minimum limit of 30,000 euros
- Round-trip air ticket
What is an attestation d’accueil?
The attestation d’accueil is a document stating that you agree to accommodate a foreign national in your home during his or her stay in the Schengen area. The attestation d’accueil is required to prove the host’s solvency. You must have sufficient resources to accommodate this person. The nationalities concerned are non-Europeans wishing to stay in France or Europe for less than 3 months, for family, private or professional reasons.
Where to obtain the attestation d’accueil for the Schengen visa?
To apply, contact your local town hall’s “Affaires Générales” department. The town hall will ask you to provide various documents such as :
- Your identity card, passport or residence permit if you are not a European citizen
- Your last 3 pay slips + your latest tax assessment
- Proof of accommodation: lease or title deed
- Photocopy of your passport
- 30 euros tax stamp (single stamp if possible)
- If the attestation concerns a minor, parental authorization is also required.
- The passport number of the person you are hosting.
Note that your application may be refused if you do not meet the criteria. To find out more, visit the service-public website.
The attestation d’accueil is issued within 48 hours of validation. You will then need to send the original version of the document (no photocopies) to the person you are hosting.
Why take out Schengen insurance?
On the certificate issued, you’ll find a statement to the effect that you or the person you are hosting has taken out international health insurance covering repatriation and medical expenses up to a minimum of €30,000.
Even if your stay is short, accidents and illness can happen. In this case, the expenses incurred can be quite high, especially if the person’s state of health requires repatriation to their country of origin.
Without health insurance, healthcare costs are entirely your responsibility, or that of the person you are caring for. If payment cannot be made, the French government is obliged to step in. That’s why it’s essential to take out a policy to avoid this kind of situation.
