Vaccines and Safety in Malaysia
Vaccination in Malaysia
- Compulsory vaccinations and certificates: You must be vaccinated against yellow fever, especially if you’re coming from an endemic area.
- Recommended vaccines and certificates: There are no other compulsory vaccines; you just need to be up to date on your vaccination schedule for typhoid, rabies, DTP, as well as viral hepatitis A and B. And if you’re not vaccinated against Japanese encephalitis, you may have a problem if you spend a long time in a rural area.
- Local diseases: Malaria, Japanese encephalitis, lymphatic filariasis and dengue fever can also be contracted from infected mosquito bites, although these diseases have been steadily declining for several years. Avoid contact with dogs and other animals, as there is a risk of catching rabies. Other food and drink-related problems include shigellosis, salmonellosis and collective food poisoning.
Safety in Malaysia
First of all, it’s worth noting that crime is rife in Malaysia, particularly among foreign nationals. Robberies are very common in major urban centers such as Kuala Lumpur. In practical terms, because of the large number of robberies and assaults (physical, sexual, knife), it is advisable to avoid carrying valuables. So, avoid carrying handbags, cameras or any other object that can be easily stolen.
In addition, due to the presence of terrorist acts, the number of police officers on the streets has increased, but you must always remain alert and vigilant. So stay on your guard during your stay.
Since 2013, the north and east coasts of the state of Sabah and the surrounding islands have been formally discouraged due to people being kidnapped or killed in the area. Avoid these areas.
Health insurance in Malaysia
Finally, you may be wondering why you should take out private health insurance when traveling or living in Malaysia. Not least because health expenses can quickly reach very high levels abroad. What’s more, health insurance is compulsory in Malaysia in order to receive treatment in a public or private establishment. Repatriation cover is also an essential criterion. In the event of a serious accident, medical repatriation to the nearest medical center or to the country of residence may be necessary. Finally, depending on where you are at the time of the accident, and on the medical prognosis, special care may be required. With Mondassur, you can therefore charter a helicopter or medical aircraft as part of your repatriation insurance.
Mondassur can help you choose an international health insurance plan by comparing the different offers on the market. Depending on your profile, we’ll be able to offer you different formulas. You can choose between travel insurance, international student insurance and expatriate insurance.
