Choosing between international health insurance and American health insurance
If you work for a company with more than 50 employees, chances are you have no choice but to take out your company’s insurance.
If you work for a smaller company, are self-employed or are an international student, you can choose between international and local insurance. How do I choose the best health insurance in the USA ?
Do you have to take out American insurance, or do you have a choice of medical insurance in the USA?
The American ACA or Obamacare law defines the conditions of the American healthcare system.
The Patient Protection And Affordable Care Act – ACA, also known as Obamacare, is a law enacted by President Barack Obama on March 30, 2010 to reform the American healthcare system.
This highly controversial law has since been amended by an executive order issued by President Trump.
This decree limits the conditions under which the law can be applied and offers greater flexibility in the choice of medical insurance.
The great novelty of the ACA lies in the fact that since January 1, 2014, it has been mandatory for all Americans and permanent residents in the USA to have health insurance.
This law concerns almost all residents of the American territory, namely:
- Legal Permanent Residents, i.e. Green Card holders
- beneficiaries of political asylum
- refugees
- Cuban and Haitian nationals
- Temporary Protected Status (nationals of devastated countries)
If you reside in the US and have not taken out ACA Compliant US health insurance, for example via the Healthmarket, you are no longer subject to penalty payments.
You have the option of taking out international health insurance.
If you are an international student, you can take out international health insurance and do not need to take out ACA compliant insurance.
Benefits of International Health Insurance
In many cases, taking out international health insurance is far more advantageous.
Taking out health insurance that does not meet Obamacare requirements is by no means illegal.
In the absence of group insurance from your employer, it makes more sense to take out a non-ACA compliant international health insurance policy, rather than a very expensive American policy that won’t cover you as well.
In order to remain affordable, American insurers impose deductibles of around $6,000 for an individual and $12,000 for a family, and the need to go through the insurance company’s medical network.
If you have to use a medical practitioner who is not part of the network, you will be less well reimbursed, with out-of-pocket expenses sometimes running as high as 50% of medical expenses.
When you choose Mondassur, you’re opting for international insurance tailored to your expatriate profile . You’ll be covered with no deductible in the U.S. and the rest of the world, for as long as you choose.
The amounts reimbursed for medical consultations or hospitalization are also higher than those reimbursed by an American ACA Compliant insurance policy for any doctor with no obligation to be affiliated to a network.
