Working in Spain

Schooling in Spain

Foreign pupils wishing to enroll in Spanish nursery, primary or secondary schools do not need to have their previous studies certified; they enter directly into the class corresponding to their age.
There are 23 French establishments in Spain. Scholarships may be awarded to children from French families who do not have sufficient resources to cover their school fees.
There are also many English-speaking establishments, as well as Swedish and German schools.

Accommodation in Spain

Rent prices are not affordable in the big cities, but are always inclusive of service charges. In Madrid and Barcelona, prices for a furnished apartment start at €600/month. Roommates are very common in Spain, as they cost half as much.
You must leave one or two months’ rent as a deposit and in cash to cover any damage you may cause.
There is usually no inventory of fixtures, so take photos and draw up an inventory if the property is furnished.
The lease generally lasts 5 years, with a minimum of one year. It’s best to draw up a rental contract that specifies your commitments and those of the owner, as well as the amount of charges.

How much does it cost to live in Spain?

On average, the cost of living in Spain is 17% lower than in France. Fruit and vegetables are cheaper, as are most everyday consumer goods. The differences aren’t huge, but they can make a big difference to your budget.

Driving in Spain

Be careful, there are many speed cameras in Spain. The speed limit is 50km/h in town, 100km/h on highways and 120km/h on freeways. In general, Spaniards respect safety distances and are not aggressive at the wheel. On the other hand, they have a bad habit of not using the blinker.

Hygiene and eating habits in Spain

No hygiene problems in restaurants, markets or stores. Tap water is safe to drink. Spaniards usually have lunch around 2 pm and dinner between 9 and 10 pm. Restaurants serve meals until very late in the afternoon and evening. The cuisine is Mediterranean, based on olive oil, starches, cold meats, cheeses, fruit and vegetables.
